Why It’s Still Good to be an American Man

The 4th of July is always a great reminder of why we are fortunate enough to live in the greatest country in the World. With all the political squabbling, widespread complaining, and depressing news stories (see Casey Anthony), it is easy to lose sight of how lucky we truly are. Take a second to sit back and reflect on why it’s still good to be an American with this article from Esquire.

The Decision that Turned a Hero to a Villain

“I’m taking my talents to South Beach”.  Every sports fan knows this quote.  LeBron James’ immortal words spawned thousands of dirty jokes and a boiling hatred from everyone in Ohio.  The Decision was supposed to be the grandiose culmination of sports’ biggest free agent hunt ever.  Unfortunately for LeBron, it turned into a debacle which has been critiqued and ridiculed by nearly everyone.  The Decision turned the most lovable athlete in the world to the most hated, in an hour.  Sports Illustrated recently published a great behind the scenes peice about how this legacy changing night came about.

Nadia Ali, Starkillers & Alex Kenji – “Pressure” (Alesso Remix)

Swedish Producer/DJ Alesso has been taking the electronic music scene by storm as of late. Continuing the long lineage of Swedish powerhouse production, Alesso is only 18 years old. He has already released some of his own original songs and continues to put out huge remixes as well. This remix of of Pressure is no different. Alesso’s superb production, which is an almost stutter step beat when it drops, mixed with Nadia Ali’s vocals create a feel good song that already lit up the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas. This kid will be huge.

Mission Impossible 4

There have obviously already been three of these made, so you should pretty much know what to expect going into this movie. However, with that being said, Tom Cruise + Jeremy Renner (Hurt Locker) + beautiful women + huge explosions/action scenes + Eminem on the soundtrack = a recipe for entertainment. After watching the above trailer, count me in.

Adele – “Set Fire to the Rain”

Although Adele has always been popular with her own fans and genre, she really became mainstream  with her latest album 21 and huge hit single Rolling in the Deep. The British songstress combines sultry, beautiful vocals with an eclectic sound that is a mix of blues, folk, country, and even disco. As a follow up to Deep, Set Fire to the Rain is another amazing song. By itself, it is fantastic, but you had to know it was going to receive the remix treatment. Thomas Gold takes it to another level with his own below.

Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN

ESPN has dominated the world of sports as of late, but was once a fledgling, start up cable company that had the wild idea to broadcast sports 24/7. Those Guys Have All the Fun is an oral history of the company told by the people that were there making it happen. Written by the same duo that gave us the oral history of SNL (Live From New York), James Miller and Tom Shales, this book interviews everyone from the network’s creator to its biggest personalities and star athletes. It is a fascinating read to learn about how the company started, barely survived, and then made it to where it is today.  Although it carries a hefty page count, the book is full of great stories, amazing insights, and fascinating details.

Summer Style – Chinos

It’s the middle of summer, you’re headed to an event, and shorts or jeans don’t seem right. Hopefully, you’ll be able to open up your closet and pull out a pair of light, cool chinos to substitue for denim. Although considered preppy, a decent pair of chinos can be a welcome addition to any wardrobe, especially in a fun, non-traditional color. Yes, you may take a few jabs from friends or coworkers, but colored chinos are definitely in, so take a risk and you should be commended for the bold fashion choice.

Aziz Ansari

Aziz Ansari is not only one of the most popular stand up comics around right now, but he also stars in the hit NBC show Parks and Recreation and has been in a ton of movies lately. Last summer, Aziz set off on his second headlining tour, Dangerously Delicious, and is still currently doing shows. I personally saw the show, laughed my ass off, and can’t recommend it enough. If you haven’t seen Aziz, check out his stand up videos, Parks and Recreation, or this MUST SEE CLIP from Jimmy Fallon’s show.

Why Can’t US Build a Soccer Star

After this weekend’s devastating loss to the Mexico, the US Men’s soccer team seems to be struggling to find answers.  While the Yanks were getting beat, one thing was obvious to everyone viewing, the Americans just don’t have the type of players that can take over a game.  The Wall Street Journal put together a great piece on why America has yet to put a top-tier talent in the Red, White and Blue.  Click here to get a little more knowledge on why we struggle to develop soccer stars.
